I think the way to go is get up early and wait in line – none of the stores in the DC area have it. I think I’ll have to drag my sister (who the iPhone is for) with me as well.

AT&T Direct Fulfillment orders, the only way to get an iPhone from AT&T right now it looks like, took me 13 days from order to pickup (ordered on the 17th, picking up today, the 30th), for the 16GB Black model. The White 16GB models are more common and I hear are shipping (overnight to the store) in under 3 days. However, you must activate the phone with a contract before you leave the store, whether you buy from AT&T or an Apple Store. The Apple Store here in Indianapolis has all three phone models in stock right now, and many Apple Stores across the country are now in stock most of the time. However, if you have an existing AT&T plan with any type of discount on it (from where you work or go to school, etc.) or it’s a corporate plan, you must buy from AT&T as Apple cannot activate a phone on your plan in that case (this was my problem; my wife gets a discount on our plan from her employer).

If you have any other questions, let me know…I’ve done some pretty heavy research to figure out what the options are. Google’s your friend, too, but there is some misinformation or incomplete information out there, too (really? On teh internets? Misinformation? Who’d have thunk it? :-)
